Nigerians respond to China’s former Minister of Justice’s death sentence for bribery by saying, “This is what Nigerian politicians deserve.”

Nigerian celebrities have responded in various ways to the news that the Chinese justice minister Fu Zhenghua has been given a two-year reprieve from his death sentence after pleading guilty to corruption involving $16 million.

The Intermediate People’s Court of Changchun in northeast China’s Jilin province reportedly convicted 67-year-old Fu guilty. The court’s decision said that after serving two years in jail, the death sentence may be commuted.

Between 2005 and 2021, Fu, who held the office of minister of justice from March 2018 to April 2020, is accused of “taking advantage” of his position, including collecting bribes totaling more than 117 million yuan (about $16.76 million), and “bending the law for personal benefits.” According to the article, the court permanently removed Fu’s political rights.

The court’s decision, which was cited by the Chinese national broadcaster CGTN, stated that although Fu’s punishment could be commuted to life in prison in accordance with the law after a two-year moratorium on his execution, no further reduction or parole will be granted to him.

As the head of the Beijing public security bureau between 2014 and 2015, Fu was found to have withheld information pertaining to a felony that his brother Fu Weihua was allegedly involved in committing. Fu Weihua was able to avoid punishment for a considerable amount of time thanks to this concealment, the court concluded in its ruling.

“The amount of bribes Fu had accepted was enormous, and he had committed particularly serious offenses that resulted in significant damage to the interests of the state and the people.

Additionally, it had a particularly negative societal impact, it said.

The court did note that Fu, who was given a “lenient sentence” because he “confessed to all his crimes and pled guilty during the investigation, provided clues for important cases, and had been cooperative in returning his illegal gains,” received it because he had served as justice minister the previous year.

Adeyemi Okanlawon responded to this by writing, “This is what Nigeria needs.
